Surrealist painter and illustrator of Ukrainian origin (Kharkov 1901 - Paris 1968), Maurice Baskine joined the surrealist group in 1946 and participated in the 1947 exhibition at the Maeght Gallery, where he made the thirteenth altar entitled: "The Athanor." Influenced by esotericism, he will engrave three etchings for Arcane 17 by André Breton published at the Sagittaire in 1947.
