Shinkichi Tajiri: The Restless Wanderer, opens tonight at Bonnefanten in Maastricht. This deeply personal exhibition is curated by his own grandchildren, Tanéa & Shakuru Tajiri.
“The exhibition represents the culmination of a two-year investigation into our family history and the impact of Shinkichi’s self-imposed exile on his life, work, family, and artistic evolution. The show will include new material from our family archives, anecdotes, and key works from his oeuvre. It will also feature pieces from Shinkichi’s friends, collaborators and sources of inspiration, such as Ferdi, Karel Appel, Constant, and Isamu Noguchi. We aim to provide insight into how Shinkichi processed the separation from his homeland in his art and how he eventually found solace at Kasteel Scheres - the place where we spent our childhood and where three generations of Tajiri’s have lived and worked.
Curating this exhibition has given us an opportunity to re-examine our grandfather's life and reconsider his profound influence on us. We wish not only to pay tribute to our grandfather and his oeuvre but also to spotlight his role and significance as a father and grandfather. We believe that Shinkichi’s story will resonate with many. Themes of migration and exile are universal and carry a tragically current significance. We hope that this exhibition, initially born from displacement and exile, can ultimately serve as a platform that brings together people of various backgrounds and ages.”
